Care Guide for Rust-Resistant Grab Bars
Do Grab Bars Rust Over Time?
While stainless steel grab bars (types #301/304) are designed to be rust-resistant, they are not entirely immune to rust. Generally, they will not rust or stain even after extended use. However, without proper care, they might develop minor rust or stains over time.
How to Prevent Rust on Grab Bars
To avoid rust on grab bars, keep them away from:
- Concentrated chlorine (including urine spray).
- Corrosive or acidic cleaners (avoid bleach).
- High-iron water or iron tools/materials (e.g., steel wool).
How to Remove Rust from Grab Bars
If rust appears, remove it quickly to prevent permanent pitting.
Steps:
- Apply a mild abrasive cleaner (Bon Ami or Ajax) with a wet cotton cloth to the affected area.
- Rub in the direction of the grain until the rust is removed.
- Rinse well and dry thoroughly.
For persistent stains, scrub with stainless steel wool and a mild abrasive paste, following the grain. Use stainless pads, sponges, or plastic/wood tools if scraping is needed.
